Old 515 Help

Hey all! Hope this finds everyone well. Just curious to see if anyone can help me out! Does anyone know if anyone sells or has access to the old style 515 cones? Pre-515b style? Any help would be greatly appreciated

I think Bill at GPA can special order them for you... Don't know how they compare to the originals though.. Do you have the original cone numbers from your 515's ?

There's a guy on ebay with the paper surrounds cones for 515's too.

I have an older pair of 515s and would love to get them back to their original state. They were reconed in the mid 90's and were reconed with 515B style cones. I don't think they saved the original spiders. I guess I'll be on the hunt for them as well....

So I'm dying to be educated on this subject....what was the progression of 515's? I know of the 815 in the iconic but what happened next? where did it go from there? I'm a huge Altec fan and was always curious. 515 RWB then 515, 515b, ect?

Yes that is pretty much the progression. Then the 515C,515E,515-8LFE,515G,then i think it went to a 515-GHP,

I think that progression is correct. But, would have been preceded by a field coil model, and to round out the alnico motored versions would be followed by 515C, and 515-8LF, AFAIK.

Anyone reproduce the dustcap for the early 515s?

@ kn8243 ,As I posted before here and at AK .Contact Bill at GPA.. I think he can get what you need,cones,dustcaps,etc....

GPA is the place for all Altec speakers....

That would be good news for me, since the last time I asked Bill H about replacing 515 cones, he said the only choice was conversion to a 515b. If the paper cones on e-bay are OEM from the 40's or 50's you would still have to worry about the effects of time on the materials, unless they were stored in an inert gas or something....
